7 Things You May Not Know About Shama

December 14th, 2008

By: Shama HyderShama Hyder

It’s a blogger chain! You write 7 things that someone may not know about you, and then you tag 7 other bloggers who do the same. Well, I’ve been tagged by the remarkable Kevin Eikenberry. Think email forwards on steroids! I usually pass on these things, but I do get a LOT of questions about what I like to do in my free time, etc. So, I thought this was a good chance to give you a peak behind the curtain.

1. I love country music. No, seriously. You can stop laughing now…When I was a kid, my uncle used to listen to the Judds (Why not me…), and I fell in love with the genre. My favorites: LeAnn Rimes, Taylor Swift, and Brad Paisley.

2. I read ridiculously fast. And I don’t speed read. I don’t even know what that means. I don’t use a technique, I just read fast. 750 pages in 4 hours fast. 400 blog posts a day fast. I retain about 80%.

3. I am NOT first generation. Most people assume that I am 1st generation Indian (or Middle Eastern). I am not. I wasn’t born in the U.S. I was born in Goa, India and spent the majority of my childhood in Bangalore, India. I moved  to New York when I was 9. My kids, most likely, will be 1st generation.

4. I am a history buff. Freshmen year in high school, they called me the history channel. Again, seriously. The past holds a very deep fascination for me. I find history alluring. There I said it. If I didn’t run an online marketing firm, I’d most likely be a history professor or a librarian.

5.  My mother is an actress. She has acted in several Indian-American independent films and plays. She also wanted wants me to be an actress. = )

6.  Astrology is a hobby. When I was a junior in college, I made some friends who LIVED by the stars. I don’t do the same, but it was quite an education. I have never let that go. I enjoy studying the stars. And in case you were wondering…I am a Taurus Sun, Cancer Moon, and Scorpio Rising (just barely-29 degrees).

7. I have only 2 vices. I don’t drink (not even coffee), smoke, or party late. I have 2 vices. Books and Chocolate. People have lured me into doing speaking engagements in exchange for chocolate (not kidding). And, I am addicted to books.

Now, your turn ; )

Wow! Great things to learn about you and I wish I could read like that.

  2. Naomi Says:

    Hi Shama,

I actually love reading posts like this. It gives you a deeper look into the person you follow and there’s always something you NEVER expect the person to reveal about themselves or their family. I had initailly assumed you were born in the U.S. I think it’s really awesome you were born and partially raised in your country. You must have a strong sense of background due to that. Do you ever plan to return to India to work or do you see yourself remaining in the U.S. indefinitely?

  3. Leesa Barnes Says:

Oh, sugarsnaps! I’ve got to put my 7 things list together. I think I did one about a year ago. I’ll find it and link back to you. Thanks for the tag :)

  4. Carlos Hernandez Says:

    Hi,

I enjoyed meeting you at BlogWorld ‘07 during your Facebook marketing presentation.

Almond Joy does it for me!

  5. Carolann Jacobs Says:

Country Music? I would have taken you for a techno girl!

OK… how to I participate in the 7?

  6. Nancy Marmolejo, Viva Visibility Says:

Oh, the country music one floored me! But you live in Texas so I shouldn’t be too surprised. Can’t wait to see the others!!

I did this recently, here’s mine… you’ll be really disappointed about me and chocolate.

    love
    Nancy

  7. Shama Says:

Here is the kicker Nancy…I liked country music-even as a kid in India! = )

  8. Shama Says:

Techno? Yikes! lol. New age perhaps. : ) You can just create your own list and tag 7 more!

  9. Angel Adams Says:

I can read really fast, but don’t retain a lot of the details. For instance, I can read a 600 page book in one sitting, but sometimes only remember a few of the names in the book.

What’s your secret for retaining 80%??

  10. Tia Singh aka @TiaSparkles Says:

I did this on facebook but with 25 things about me – so 7 is a cinch ;)

Love # 1 Shama – I grew up listening to country music too! Dad was in the Indian airforce and we travelled every 2 years till I was 14, the only constant was the music :)

Oh that’s 2 things about me!

    # 3) I used to bite my nails till I was an adult

    # 4) I love hula hooping and won a competition the 1st time I ever hooped in 2001 (at a slip and slide party nonetheless hehe)

    # 5) I am addicted to reading (even used to brush my teeth and read at the same time.) Once I took my book into the shower and tried to read it with my hand sticking far out so it wldnt get wet. Didnt work too well …

#6) My favorite flower is the sunflower – bright happy and sun shiny

    # 7) I did a month long mountaineering course and climbed a mountain at the end of it (17,353 feet – Friendship Peak, Himalayan range) in 2003. The most physically challenging thing I’ve ever done!

OOps just realised you had tagged 7 people to do this but I jumped in before I read that part haha. Oh well :) great to know a little more about you.
